UNDP Announces 2010 Red Ribbon Award Winners PDF Print E-mail

An Ethiopian association is among the 25 global winners of the Red Ribbon prize. The prize recognizes outstanding community based organizations for their work in reducing the spread and impact of AIDS.

Nikat Women’s Association is the first community-based association in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia that is devoted to improving the living conditions of low-income women and commercial sex workers, thereby fighting poverty and protecting the right to health.


The Red Ribbon is an initiative of the UNAIDS family. Read more about the winners

Data obtained in 2005 from ANC surveillance and the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) indicate that the epidemic may be less severe, less generalized and more heterogeneous than previously believed. A careful assessment of data gathered over the last four years suggests that the epidemic
has stabilized, with adult HIV prevalence estimated at 2.2% in 2003/04 and 2.1% in 2006/07.

In 2003,the Government of Ethiopia introduced its ART programme with the goal of reducing HIV-related morbidity and mortality, improving the quality of life of people living with HIV and mitigating some of the impact of the epidemic. In 2005, Ethiopia launched free ART; over 71,000 were
initiated on ART by the end of November 2006 and some 241 hospitals and health centres are now providing HIV care and treatment services in all regions of the country.

This Plan of Action is an important milestone in efforts to realize the “Three Ones” principles. The preparation of the document is the result of a number of exercises, including the single point HIV prevalence estimate, a costing of HIV/AIDS commodities, the Epidemiological Synthesis report,
the National Social Mobilization Strategy, and the Health Sector Road Map for Accelerated Access to HIV Prevention, Care and Treatment.

In Accelerating Access to HIV/AIDS Treatment in Ethiopia the narrower focus of the first Road Map is broadened to include a specific focus on Prevention; Building the ART pipeline; and Quality, therefore emphasizing programmatic linkages, integration and retention of patients who entered the ART program by providing quality care.
